Assign the panels

A folding carton offers several surfaces with different jobs. Identify the primary display face, the likely opening and the secondary reading panels. Do this on a folded sample before creating a composition.

A flat dieline can encourage a designer to treat neighbouring panels as one long canvas. That may work visually, but it can also place a key word around a corner. Decide where continuity helps and where a clear break makes the package easier to understand.

Work with the edges

Edges can organise the design. A colour change aligned with a panel boundary can clarify the structure; a continuous illustration can emphasise its wrap. Either approach needs to account for the supplier's tolerances and the way the carton is made.

Avoid making a tiny alignment carry the entire visual idea unless the production process can support it. Discuss sensitive boundaries with the printer before approval. A slightly more forgiving layout can preserve the concept while reducing visible variation.

Treat the opening as a surface

The top flap is often touched before the side panel is read. It can carry a useful cue or a short identifier. Check that the opening direction makes sense with the intended display orientation.

Inside printing should have a purpose. It might support an opening sequence or offer a concise instruction, but it also adds another decision to production. Consider whether the same information would be more accessible elsewhere before using the interior simply because it is available.

Try this in the studio

Print the real artwork, fold the carton and rotate it through the customer's likely views. Place it beside another variant and inspect the top as well as the front.

Mark every point where a word becomes hard to read or a graphic seems accidentally cut. Revise the layout on the flat file, then fold again. This modest loop catches issues that an attractive single-angle render can overlook.
