The refill container: make the next use easy

A repeatable action is a better starting point than a permanent-looking object.

Follow the refill home

Where does the refill wait before use? Where is the durable container opened? What else is on the surface? These small environmental questions can influence the shape and instructions more than a mood board does.

Sketch the full action with both components present. A container and refill designed separately may each look attractive while becoming awkward together. Check the pair as a system from the first prototype.

Make identification survive

A durable container needs to remain identifiable. Decide which information stays on it and how a new refill is matched to the correct product. Do not rely solely on a colour that may look different in another material.

If labels change, plan the replacement routine. If they remain, test their intended durability with the supplier. The design should not require the user to remember details that the packaging could communicate clearly.

Give the hands enough room

Prototype opening, holding and transferring using representative components. A narrow neck, slippery surface or cap with nowhere to rest can create friction. Record the action rather than judging only the final appearance.

Technical suitability, cleaning and product compatibility need the appropriate expert input. The designer's contribution is to make the intended routine visible and understandable so those questions can be answered against a concrete proposal.

Try this in the studio

Ask someone unfamiliar with the concept to demonstrate the refill using a safe representative setup. Observe where they pause and what they set down.

Improve the repeated action before adding more products to the system. A refill concept becomes convincing when the next use is as well considered as the first purchase.

Make it practical
