Before the beautiful render, fold a piece of paper
A rough physical model can answer questions that a polished image has not yet asked.

Use the prototype to learn one thing
A first prototype does not need to imitate every material and finish. Give it a question: does the opening make sense, can the product be removed comfortably or does the label cross an awkward edge? A focused question makes a rough model useful.
Write the question on the model or in the project notes. Otherwise a quick fit experiment can later be mistaken for an approved structure. The model's limitations should be as clear as its purpose. Paper is a convenient exploratory material, but it may behave very differently from the final board or flexible film.
Measure the product, then check clearance
Start with the real object's dimensions and orientation. Account for the parts that protrude, such as a cap or handle. If the product varies, use representative samples rather than assuming every unit is identical.
Clearance is a design decision, not simply an extra number added everywhere. Too little can make packing difficult; too much can allow movement. Explore the fit with the intended insert or protection concept. The final tolerances should be agreed with the supplier using the actual materials and process.
Put the artwork on the model early
Even a basic printed layout reveals how panels meet. A word that sits comfortably on the flat sheet may disappear around a corner. A colour boundary may look misaligned when the box is folded, especially if the structure has an overlap.
Mark the intended front, opening and base before adding decoration. Then place the real product name and the densest information panel. This avoids spending the entire prototype session admiring the easiest face. The difficult panel is often where the most useful learning happens.
Let someone else open it
Hand over the model without demonstrating the sequence. Watch where the person applies force and how they hold it. Do not rescue the interaction immediately unless necessary; the hesitation itself is information.
Ask specific questions afterwards. Where did you expect it to open? What did you think could be thrown away? Which piece seemed reusable? These questions produce more useful answers than asking whether the design looks nice. Keep a few short observations rather than trying to turn a small exercise into a broad consumer claim.
Connect the physical and digital versions
Update the drawing when the model reveals a problem. A paper adjustment that never reaches the file is easy to lose. Photograph the changed area and label the revision. The digital model should reflect the decision that the team is actually discussing.
A 3D visual then becomes more useful because it presents a better-understood structure. It can show alternative artwork, materials or viewing angles while the physical sample continues to answer fit and handling questions. Neither format has to replace the other.
Know when to move beyond paper
Once the concept is promising, ask for a representative sample from the intended supplier. Material thickness, creasing, closures and production equipment can change the result. A hand-cut model is not a transport test or a manufacturing approval.
Keep the early prototype as a record of what you learned. It may be rough, but it captures decisions that a final image can conceal. The point is to spend a little effort discovering the wrong assumption before it becomes expensive.
